Rev. Sean C. Evans became the 4th pastor of the New Light Missionary Baptist Church in the city of Newark, New Jersey in January of 2005. Since taking the pulpit, New Light Baptist Church has grown from a small neighborhood church of about twenty-five members to one of Newark’s dynamic up-and-coming churches with two hundred members and growing.
Located in Newark’s West Ward, Pastor Evans brand of enthusiastic leadership has breathed new life into a congregation that has worshipped on 14th Avenue since 1958. Under his pastoral leadership the sanctuary has been completely remodeled, a new church van purchased, a new church marquee erected, a new roof installed, and parking lots completely resurfaced. Pastor Evans helped usher New Light into a truly modern worship experience. Ministries birthed under his watch included a Youth Ministry, Liturgical Dance, Audio and Visual Ministry, and a cutting edge ministry that enables sick, shut-in and long-distance members to commune with their New Light family through a live Sunday morning webcast service.
Pastor Evans started to preach the gospel on June 28, 1992 at the age of fifteen at the Simon Baptist Church. In 1996, he joined one of Newark’s oldest African-American churches, First Mount Zion Baptist Church, under the Pastorate of the Rev. Dr. L. Ronald Durham. At First Mount Zion, Pastor Evans served as Youth Pastor and Director of Christian Education. Following the leadership of the Lord in 2003, Pastor Evans joined the Newark’s Clear View Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Eric M. Beckham as Associate Pastor where he remained until being called by New Light in 2005.
An advocate for youth, Pastor Evans is a 16 year veteran of the Public School System, working in and outside of the classroom to help students improve their lives. He currently serves as Assistant Principal at a large urban high school.
Pastor Evans served as an elected member of the Irvington School Board (2011-2013). He was appointed Chaplain of Irvington Fire and Police (2014) and Commissioner of Irvington Housing Authority (2015).
Born in Toronto, Pastor Evans was raised in Plainfield, New Jersey by his Jamaican parents Rev. Dr. Alvin & Navelth Evans, R.N. Pastor Evans is married to the former Amoy Blake of May Pen (Clarendon), Jamaica.
Pastor Evans earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at the age of 18. He also holds a Masters in Educational Administration and Supervision from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ. He is currently a graduate student in the Master of Arts in Theological Studies at Liberty University (Lynchburg). Pastor Evans is a servant of God, whose most important mission is to show the Lord’s love to all his children.
