Rev. Sean C. Evans became the 4th pastor of New Light Missionary Baptist Church in the City of Newark, New Jersey in January of 2005. Since taking the pulpit, New Light has grown from a small neighborhood church of about twenty members to one of Newark’s dynamic up-and-coming churches with several hundred members and growing.
Located in Newark’s West Ward, Pastor Evans brand of enthusiastic leadership has breathed new life into a congregation that has worshiped on 14th Avenue since 1955. A new 8am worship service was added, the sanctuary was completely remodeled — twice — and a new church van has been purchased. Pastor Evans helped usher New Light into a truly modern worship experience. Ministries birthed under his watch include a Youth, Liturgical Dance and an audio/visual ministry that enables sick, shut-in and long-distance members to commune with their New Light family through a live Sunday morning webcast of service.
Pastor Evans was ordained on August 2, 1994 at the age of sixteen. In 1996, he joined one of Newark’s oldest African-American churches, First Mount Zion Baptist Church, under the Pastorate of the Rev. Dr. L. Ronald Durham. At First Mt. Zion, Pastor Evans served as Youth Pastor and Director of Christian Education. Following the leadership of the Lord in 2003, Pastor Evans joined the Newark’s Clear View Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Eric M. Beckham as Associate Pastor where he remained until being called by New Light in 2005.
An advocate for youth, Pastor Evans is a 14-year veteran of the Newark Public Schools, working in and outside of the classroom to help students improve their lives. In 2009, he was elected to the Irvington (NJ) School Board.
Born in Toronto in 1977, Pastor Evans was raised in Plainfield, New Jersey by his Jamaican parents Rev. Dr. Alvin & Navelth Evans, R.N. Pastor Evans is married to the former Amoy Blake of May Pen (Clarendon), Jamaica.
Pastor Evans earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the age of 18. He also holds a Masters in Educational Administration and Supervision from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City. Pastor Evans is a servant of God, whose most important mission is to show the Lord’s love to all of his children.
